Entrance of MUHCAB
Description
Inaugurated in 2017, the MUHCAB (Museu da História e da Cultura Afro-Brasileira) is located in the former José Bonifácio School in Little Africa. It seeks to tell the story of Afro-descendant communities in the region, showcase Afro-Brazilian culture, and reflect on the situation of Black people in Brazil today. The museum's mission is to "Transform the understanding of what it means to be black in Brazil, affecting and empowering Afro-Brazilian communities by guaranteeing the right to know, preserve and disseminate their history of affirmation and resistance from the physical and symbolic territory of Cais do Valongo and its surroundings, told in a participatory way, through the voices of its protagonists; and propose to society a revision of the writing of the history of Brazil, valuing African culture as a Brazilian cultural matrix."
