Description
This map is a 1913 version of the city of Houston within its city limits of the time. The map has been edited to first show the locations of the commemorations to Dick Dowling before the statue’s move to Hermann Park in 1958. In conjunction, the map indicates the major landmarks of the city at the time. The map shows that both the actual and proposed locations of the statue were located in close proximity to major public resources (library, Post Office) and governmental buildings (City Hall). Even when City Hall was moved followed a fire in 1938, Dick Dowling’s statue was moved a year later to be closer to the seat of city government, indicating its importance to many Houstonians.
