"Confederate Veterans Column" Sept. 3, 1899

S.O. Young encourages Confederate Veterans, especially privates, to contribute to the Dick Dowling Camp, U.C.V. so that Dick Dowling may have a monument over his currently-unmarked grave in a Houston cemetery. He provides the work of Mrs. Margaret L. Watson of Beaumont to renew interest in the battle. Watson's work, the majority of the article, includes an interview with Lieutenant J.M. Chasten, an officer in Griffin's battalion, who came to Sabine Pass after it was attacked and took prisoners of war from the Union side. In this interview he describes the battle (particularly the actions of the Union ships), the events he experienced on route, the Union prisoners of war taken by his troops (including 'negroes'), the dead and dying who washed ashore, and the responses of Sabine citizens. Watson praises Chaston's courage, as well as the courage and good looks of Dick Dowling. She also remarks on the character of Dowling's Irish men. She encourages the Daughters of the Confederacy and other "organizations of the kind" to assist and comfort Confederate veterans.
