Description

Photograph of a printed reproduction of an oil painting of Dick Dowling, an Irishman from Houston and Confederate Army war hero, in uniform with descriptive caption. At the time of his death from yellow fever in 1867, the "Houston Telegraph" considered him "Houston's most important citizen." Among his accomplishments he was a sound businessman, member of Houston's first fire department, bought and sold real estate, and helped found the first oil company in Houston.

Dick Dowling. Hero of the Battle of Sabine Pass, Texas. 43 Defeated 15, 000. This Picture is a copy of an Oil Painting in the Texas room in the Confederate Museum in Richmond, Va. It was painted by Mr. Thus. Donnelan, a Houston, Texas, Artist of much note.
