Title

"The Davis Guards" newsclipping

Description

This is an article revealing the strength of Dick Dowling's Confederate force at Sabine Pass to have only been "six cannon and forty-two men," as well as the Union force they rebuffed, "five gunboats... at close quarters, and several more at a greater distance." The article considers the battle to be "the greatest feat of the war," and heavily lauds the Davis Guards. Dowling's name is never mentioned, although it does point out that the Davis Guards were mostly Irish. The article discusses the "affair at Sabine Pass," which occurred a few days before the publication date on September 8, 1863.
